Tsuba Terranascianten
Inspired by The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben.
The world’s oldest tree, Old Tjikko, faces growing threats from tourism: broken branches, trampled roots, and damaged lichens.
Tsuba explores an alternative way of making invisible boundaries visible. It creates a respectful distance, inviting visitors to engage with care rather than exclusion. Its visual language, inspired by De maat der dingen, functions as an unreadable script that encourages intuitive and attentive looking. The word refers to Terranascianten: people who protect, nurture, and contribute to new life.
Geïnspireerd door Het verborgen leven van bomen onderzoekt Tsuba hoe onzichtbare grenzen zichtbaar kunnen worden gemaakt zonder uit te sluiten. De vormentaal functioneert als een intuïtief, onleesbaar schrift en verwijst naar Terranascianten: mensen die de aarde beschermen, voeden en bijdragen aan nieuw leven.
Terranascianten
Within the circle, Terranascianten is translated into a non-readable visual language. This creates space for intuition, observation, and slow looking. Meaning is not fixed immediately, but unfolds through experience. Just as we can never fully read the language of nature, the work does not ask to be immediately understood, but to be experienced with attention.
Binnen de cirkel wordt Terranascianten vertaald naar een niet-leesbare visuele taal. Net zoals we de taal van de natuur nooit volledig kunnen lezen, vraagt het werk niet om direct begrepen te worden, maar om aandachtig ervaren te worden.
Material
This work is made primarily from Dutch sheep wool, supplemented with a small amount of Scottish wool received as a donation. Wool is biodegradable and releases nutrients into the soil as it decomposes, allowing the material to return to the natural cycle. Inspired by the Symbiocene, the work explores how material can collaborate with nature rather than burden it.
Het werk is voornamelijk gemaakt van Nederlandse schapenwol, aangevuld met een kleine hoeveelheid Schotse wol die als donatie werd ontvangen. Geïnspireerd door het Symbioceen onderzoekt het werk hoe biologisch afbreekbare materialen kunnen samenwerken met de natuur en terugkeren in de natuurlijke kringloop.
