Reeflight
For this lamp, I was inspired by coral reefs. I was deeply struck by how rapidly coral reefs are disappearing, and how few people are aware of the scale of this loss. I wanted to find a way to raise awareness of coral.
To do this, I began researching coral and decided to focus on bringing more attention to it. My goal was to give coral a place in people’s homes and in their hearts. This inspiration led me to create a light object made of paper, highlighting the vulnerability of coral and making its fragility visible.
Voor Reeflight liet ik me inspireren door koraalriffen en hun snelle verdwijning. Met een lichtobject van papier wil ik de kwetsbaarheid van koraal zichtbaar maken en meer bewustzijn creëren. Zo krijgt koraal een plek in zowel ons huis als ons bewustzijn.

For this new series, I made several changes to the original design. I chose a round shape so the coral can be viewed from every angle, emphasizing its organic form and presence. I also developed different models a wall lamp, a ceiling lamp, and a table lamp so the pieces can fit into a variety of spaces and homes.
While the lamp shades are still made of paper to express the fragility of coral, I’ve updated the base to metal. This change adds strength and gives the coral the sense of protection it deserves.
Voor Reeflight N0.2 heb ik het ontwerp aangepast met een ronde vorm en meerdere varianten (wand-, plafond- en tafellamp). De papieren kap benadrukt de kwetsbaarheid van koraal, terwijl de metalen basis bescherming en stevigheid toevoegt.

Exploring a new way of working with light.
In this piece, the light doesn't sit inside the lamp, it surrounds it.
The lamp is no longer the source of light, but the object the light interacts with.
It’s not the lamp shaping the light, but the light shaping the lamp.
In Experimental Materials verken ik een nieuwe manier van werken met licht. Het licht zit niet in de lamp, maar eromheen en bepaalt de vorm en beleving. Zo wordt de lamp niet de lichtbron, maar het object dat door licht wordt gevormd.
